Buried Treasure – by @gilliallan – 5* review, paperback launch and cover reveal!

Today, I’m delighted to be part of the paperback launch and cover reveal of Gilli Allan’s Buried Treasure!

I had the pleasure of reading the Kindle version of the book at the end of last year and you can read my review below. But first, here’s the reader description:

Jane thinks he sees her as shallow and ill-educated. Theo thinks she sees him as a snob, stuffy and out of touch.

Within the ancient precincts of the university the first encounter between the conference planner and the academic is accidental and unpromising. Just as well there’s no reason for them ever to meet again. But behind the armour they’ve each constructed from old scars, they’ve more in common than divides them. Both have an archaeological puzzle they are driven to solve. As their stories intertwine, their quest to uncover the past unearths more than expected.

My review

I found Buried Treasure a compelling read. It was so many things: a love story, a hunt for clues to lost secrets, and a fascinating look at how our past experiences shape us, and how we can heal even after damage. The characters were wonderfully well drawn.

The book follows the stories of Jane and Theo, and the author interweaves snippets of their past and present, to show their actions in context. I really loved that approach and got hooked by both the historical and contemporary storylines.

The settings were all vividly described too. (I’m not an academic but I used to work at the University of Cambridge and the description of the dynamics really rang true.)

More about Gilli…

Gilli Allan began to write in childhood – a hobby pursued throughout her teenage years. Writing was only abandoned when she left home, and real life supplanted the imaginary kind.

After a few false starts she worked longest and most happily as an illustrator in advertising and only began writing again when she became a mother.

Living in Gloucestershire with her husband Geoff, Gilli is still a keen artist. She draws and paints and has now moved into book illustration.

All of her recent books TORN, LIFE CLASS, FLY or FALL and BURIED TREASURE have gained ‘Chill with a Book’ awards.

Following in the family tradition, her son, historian Thomas Williams, is now also a writer.

  1. Will there ever be a new Tara Thorpe? I’ve read them twice. The characters are excellent, but everything was left so unresolved after reaching a really exciting point (in Murder in the Fens). I’ve read all of Eve Mallow, but as a character, Tara is so much more compelling and complex. Please bring her back, even for one more book to “wind things up.”

    1. Hi Lizette! Thanks very much for your comment and I’m so glad that you enjoyed the Tara books. I loved writing them too! The trouble is lack of time. At the moment, my contracts with my publisher are for other books, and my days are very full. But I would definitely consider writing more Taras, schedule and contracts permitting. Thanks again for your interest!
